WHY STOP SMOKING?

  • Around 120,000 people are killed in the UK every year by smoking
  • Smoking kills around 6 times more people in the UK than road accidents
  • About half of all regular cigarette smokers will eventually be killed by the habit
  • Smokers who smoke between 1-14 cigarettes a day have 8 times the risk of dying form lung cancer and those on 25 a day are 25 times more at risk
  • Smokers increase the risk of a heart attack by 2-3 times, compared to non smokers
  • Fewer than 10% of lung cancer patients survive 5 years after diagnosis
  • It is estimated that several hundred cases of lung cancer and several thousand cases of heart disease in non smokers in the UK are caused by passive smoking
  • More than 17,000 children under the age of 5 are admitted to hospital every year due to the effect of passive smoking
  • Tobacco contains over 4,000 chemical compounds

And so the list goes on….so why smoke?

A lot of people find it hard to give up a habit they have enjoyed for years. The reasons are clear; they are addicted to the chemicals that cigarettes contain; they are also addicted to the triggers that prompt their habit, such as the first cigarette in the morning with a cup of tea or the cigarette in the car on the way to work.

Hypnosis acts like an amplifier for your own will power and removes unconscious triggers; it targets the habit breaking element of smoking by desensitizing techniques, and allows the subconscious to re-learn new habits. Hypnotherapy has been proven to be a safe and effective method for relieving a smoker’s cravings and habit, alleviating the worry over weight gain, and motivating new fitness regimes.

Smoking cessation is usually carried out in a one off session lasting between 1 – 2 hours.

The Key to Success is Confidence

Having confidence and feeling good about yourself is essential for mental and emotional well-being. Individuals with a high sense of self-worth see themselves as being in control of their lives, and are more likely to succeed in their goals. But the problem is that few people will let go of their fears, before they feel confident and strong enough to do without them.

Hypnosis is a powerful tool which is effective for lots of different people and problems. It enables you to deal with the source of self-image issues, and releases the power of your own mind and inner potential. Hypnotherapy can increase your belief and confidence in yourself, enhance your coping abilities, and greatly reduce anxiety and worrying as a result. It reinforces self-reliance, respect in oneself and a sense of pride, self-worth and a positive self image enabling you to fulfill your true potential.

PHOBIAS AND FEARS

If you carried out a survey of a 100 people and asked them if they were scared by spiders, about 50% would probably have some concern about being in close proximity to one. Out of that 50% a few would have what is called a Phobia i.e: an abnormal fear which is brought on by a particular object or situation which leads to avoidance of the provoking stimulus. There are many different Phobias and fears - Agoraphobia, Claustrophobia, Social Phobia, Specific Animal Phobias and fear of flying to name but a few, some rational and some irrational to the bystander. However, these fears are very real and sometimes life debilitating for the sufferer.

Hypnotherapy is safe and fast in relieving the symptoms which cause these phobias. By desensitizing the subconscious to the fear itself and re-programming it, relief can be gained in one to two sessions.

STRESS AND ANXIETY/PANIC ATTACKS

In the fast lives we all lead today, it is not surprising that we find it hard to unwind or to relax and allow our body and mind to catch up with the pace. It is important for our well being and health to allow our bodies time to switch off. Stress and Anxiety are a cause for many visits to the GP with problems of insomnia, irritable bowl syndrome, gastric problems, migraines etc.

If the human body is constantly being flooded with adrenalin caused by stress it becomes overwhelmed and cannot cope. Learning to relax by teaching self-hypnosis is effective in treating stress but also finding out the trigger points that create the anxiety in the first place and teaching the sub-conscious new ways of dealing with these situations is also very effective.

Panic attacks can be so debilitating that the person having them becomes withdrawn and depressed, their lives constricted by the fear of having another one. Shortness of breath, choking sensations, palpitations, chest discomfort, sweating, dizziness etc are all signs of a panic attack either starting or in full swing. They are often also accompanied by a sense of imminent danger, impending doom and an urge to escape.

Hypnotherapy can unravel the cause and effect the panic attacks have and teach news skills and relaxation to deal with the symptoms. Panic attacks can usually be treated in 3 sessions.

WEIGHT LOSS

Obesity is on the rise in the UK and around the world. It is commonly known that we tend to eat too much of the unhealthy food types and no longer take enough exercise to burn them off. Many diets do not work because they do not change the habits and eating triggers people have, instead they deny us the foods we like to eat, in turn making us crave more of these same foods.

Hypnotherapy desensitizes these triggers and cravings, by finding out the core reason behind the over eating. Re-educating the brain to eat in a healthy way and avoiding the foods that make us put on weight. Motivating and focusing you to a specific goal, such as a dress or outfit you want to wear to a specific event etc. and taking back control over your body. Increasing the desire to exercise and regaining confidence and self esteem lost by excessive weight.

Weight control usually takes between 3-6 sessions dependent on the amount of weight loss required.

EXAM NERVES/PERFORMANCE ANXIETY

Everyone needs a small amount of nerves and anxiety to heighten our concentration and allow us to perform to our utmost ability. However when we relive a past negative experience, or become nervous about something we have not done before, these same feelings can hinder our ability to perform well.

Hypnotherapy can teach relaxation skills and allow you to rehearse events by visualization when you are relaxed. Triggers that create the anxiety in the first place, such as walking up the steps to the exam room, putting on make-up before a performance, or waiting for your turn to speak in a meeting, can all be broken down and desensitized.

Exam nerves and performance anxiety can usually be successfully treated in 1-2 sessions.

PAIN MANAGEMENT IN CHILDBIRTH

Why use hypnosis for childbirth?

  • Shortens labour by up to 3 to 4 hours
  • Reduces the use of pain medication with the reduction of undesirable post-operative effects for mother, fetus and baby
  • Leads to reduction of fear, tension and pain before and during labour, with consequent rise in pain threshold
  • Minimizes maternal exhaustion
  • Promotes speedier recovery after delivery
  • Reduces the incidence of instrumental/surgical deliveries (forceps, ventouse or Caesarean sections)
  • Promotes high Apgar score (measurement of baby well being – Pulse, Respiratory Effort, Muscle Tone, Colour, Cough reflex)

So why don’t we use hypnotherapy more often in childbirth? Well in other countries such as Russia hypnosis has been used for many centuries to relieve pain in childbirth. In the UK it is only now being recognized as a viable tool in pain relief. Studies have shown that the average length of labour for first time mothers using hypnotherapy can be reduced from 12 hours to 5.5hours for the first stage of labour. Caesarean rates reduced from 21% to 6.7% and epidurals from 95% to 40%.

Hypnosis reduces the associated fears of labour, and creates a satisfactory state of mind for the pregnancy, labour and delivery, as well as for the aftercare of the child. Teaching self-hypnosis and relaxation techniques help with contractions and hyper emesis (vomiting) and can produce analgesia of the perinea area. Hypnosis also increases resistance of exhaustion; it does not interfere with the normal mechanisms of labour.

Hypnosis is also very beneficial to those who have suffered a traumatic birth in previous deliveries, by desensitizing fears and anxieties and teaching new ways of relaxing, reprogramming the subconscious mind to a more positive outlook and therefore alleviating past trauma.

Pain management in childbirth is taught in 4 sessions.
